Acupuncture
Dr Low is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist and offers canine acupuncture as a treatment and preventative for many canine health issues. Acupuncture can be used to assist in the treatment of many different conditions. Acupuncture can block the transmission of pain, alter internal organ function, influence brain function and hormonal regulation, decrease inflammation, and speed healing. Commonly treated conditions include musculoskeletal, neurologic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, reproductive, immune, and ocular conditions.
Acupuncture at particular points of the dog's body creates responses that promote healing and decrease inflammation. Neuro-hormonal responses cause nerve stimulatoin, increase circulation, and create the release of endorphins and cortisol. All of these factores have healing effects on the body.
The needles used for canine acupuncture are so fine that dogs seem to show little sensitivity to the insertion of needles. If there is some sensitivity upon insertion, it is momentary. Most dogs simply relax or fall asleep during treatment.
The length and number of treatments will vary depending on the dog's individual situation and response to acupuncture. Chronic or severe ailments may take several treatments to yield results, yet some dogs get relief after the first acupuncture treatment.
