Tonometry

What is Tonometry?

Tonometry is the measurement of pressure within the eye (called intraocular pressure, IOP) to determine if glaucoma is present.

Dr. Low uses an instrument called a Tonopen to measure the pressure in your pets eyes and to diagnose glaucoma. Glaucoma is caused by the buildup of fluid within the eye. Abnormally high pressure can damage the optic nerrve, leading to vision loss.

Tonometry is also useful for identifying low IOP, which may occur with inflammation inside the eye (anterior uveitis) or following intraocular surgery.

Normal values vary between species of animals, time of day, and sometimes vary between breeds and individuals.
